What Medical Experiments did Josef Mengele perform at Auschwitz?
Mengele's role in Medical Experiments
Josef Mengele's job as being camp doctor involved an abundance of medical experiments. He was very interested with twins and people with genetic abnormalities like dwarfism. Mengele experimented with identical and fraternal twins to trace the genetic origins of diseases such as typhus. He was also interested in artificially changing eye color. The changing of the eye color caused horrible pain and inflammation. He documented the progression of diseases such as noma, a disease which has fast tissue degeneration to the face. Mengele is infamous for his experiments on twins. Three thousand twins were experimented at Auschwitz, twenty-six survived. This was because after all the living data was taken, twins would be killed by an injection of chloroform to the heart. The twins were then dissected with their organs being sent to research centers. Before being killed, there could be up to three weeks or medical experiments done on the twins. One of the twins Vera Kriegel saw a collection of eyes displayed on a wall in a lab, she stated,"They were pinned up like butterflies. I thought I was dead and already living in hell"(Grabowski,59). All of the experiments done were all without amnesia. Josef Mengele is mainly known for his inhumane medical experiments.
